Autumn/Winter Inspiration

So here in Australia it is the eleventh day of Autumn, and in my little city of Adelaide we've started to have some rain. I am 10000% a summer person (cold weather and wet socks? What sane person enjoys that?) but I do love dressing for Autumn. No matter what trends are set for the year, its always about layers, and I love layering. I get super excited about dressing for Autumn for approximatley one week and then decide I want summer back. Cue depression until October.

Anyway, I thought I'd share with you what's inspiring my style for Autumn this year, ranging from particular runway shows, clothing items and even some music. Hopefully this will get all you Australians excited for Autumn as well, even if you're a born and bred summer baby like me.

From top to bottom:

Dolce & Gabbana's: I was actually planning on making a blog post dedicated to Dolce & Gabbana's SS '14 show because I loved it so much, but alas, it shall instead be mentioned here. This collection of Dolce & Gabbana's was basically comprised of everything I would wear and trends I'll always have an obsession with - the coin component in particular. Anyone that knows me knows about my love for coin jewellery - there's just something about it I love. I think its the whole connotation of royalty, of elegant Roman-type women from years ago.  I also love sheer fabrics and delicate lace, whether they be used to layer or to show off a cheeky bra on a warmer day. I even loved the polka dots in this show, which is surprising, as polka dots and I have a very turbulent love/hate relationship. I also included a coat from Dolce and Gabbana's AW 14/15 show... and do I really need an explanation for this?! Look at it! I love the hood, the alpine/forrest/peasant type print and the whole Snow White vibe.

Valentino: Valentino will always be one of my most favourite designers ever but his collection for SS '14 was love at first sight. The thing I love most about Valentino is that he always captures the essence of the woman we all strive to be - strong, classic, mysterious. The Valentino woman works it, looks gorgeous and is the effin' boss. This collection is no different. I adore the ethnic vibe, a crazy combination of African colours, Mexican/Aztec prints and what seems like American Indian needlwork - a combination that somehow works amazingly. That fringed coat/cape! Ahhhh! I'll be channeling some serious chic boho style this autumn thanks to Valentino. Standing ovation.

Jill Stuart: I'm never overly interested in Jill Stuart's work but her Autumn/Winter '15 collection does have a lot of great inspiration for this season. One of my favourite things to do in Autumn is to mix up textures and this collection does that perfectly. Wool coats, sequins, embellished stockings and of course boots will be filling my autumn wardrobe. Thanks Jill Stuart.

Erdem: Erdem's AW '15 collection was filled with metallics, which I love for autumn. I especially love clothes in gold, which were seen both in Erdem's collection and Dolce & Gabbana's SS '14 collection I spoke about earlier. I'm normally not a fan of jacquard but Erdem has made me think that perhaps I'll give it a go. If I stand by anything, its that any trend can be worn well - so I'll see how I go with jacquard clothing.(Don't take that quote out of context. There are obvious things that can never be worn well, e.g. jelly sandas. Sorry.)

Marchesa: Layers, lace, fur and  metallics are all inspirations I'm drawing from Marchesa's AW '15 Collection. I love the dishevelled beauty of it all - the delicate but imperfect lace, the royalty vibe of the metallics, the slightly messy updos. Personally, when I dress in an uptown chic sort of style, I can never be 100% perfect. The boho inside of me will not let me. I'll wear a chiffon shirt and tailored pants but have to have messy hair, or mis-matched jewellery. This collection is very similar to my personal style as its very much this way - ladylike and chic, but not perfect.

Bora Aksu: Like Jill Stuart, I don't pay attention to Bora Aksu's collections. Maybe I should, as I loved the AW '15 collection. Again, sheer fabrics, furs, leather and metallics are all common themes in the inspiration I've found for this season. I also love the hints of geometric pattern in these designs, as well as that cute sock and shoe combo.

Last but not least, a quick polyvore summing up the kind of style I'm chanelling this autumn. I especially love that little purse. Its my half birthday next month, anyone want to get it for me? (I don't really celebrate half birthdays but I will for that purse). If you want to follow me on polyvore, my username is katesspace.

Now, I listen to a lot of music. A LOT. I probably have the most varied music taste known to mankind. However, I did my best to pick eight songs I probably listen to the most on Autumn days. Behold:

Blackbird - The Beatles
Big Jet Plane (Michael Brun Bootleg) - Angus & Julia Stone
Calgary - Bon Iver
Girlfriend in a Coma - The Smiths
Left Alone (Ta-Ku Remix) - Flume feat. Chet Faker
Lost - Frank Ocean
Love Lockdown - Kanye West
Sigh No More - Mumford & Sons

So, if you don't already have those beats on your iPod (which would surprise me), get downloading. I know they keep me feeling fresh and inspired.

'Till next time,
Kate
